Best pressure washers UK: 5 picks for patios, cars and muddy bikes
Autumn is when patios go green and slippery, and pressure washers are often discounted around Black Friday ahead of the spring rush. Here's how much power you really need.

How we chose: We compared pressure, flow rate, hose length, weight and accessories from manufacturer specs, drew on independent UK testing (The Guardian, Expert Reviews, The English Garden) and weighed the most common praise and complaints in Amazon.co.uk owner reviews. We have not personally tested these products; this is a research-based roundup. Our research process.

A pressure washer turns an afternoon of scrubbing into half an hour of satisfying stripes. Wet British autumns and winters leave patios, paths and decking covered in algae and moss, which can be slippery as well as ugly. Cleaning them before winter, or getting a machine ready for spring, is a popular job, and Black Friday is often a good time to buy.
Higher bar isn't automatically better. What matters is a balance of pressure (bar) and flow (litres per hour), a hose that doesn't kink, and the right nozzles and accessories for your jobs. A small patio and a car need much less than a large driveway.

The picks in detail
Kärcher K 4 Power Control Flex Pressure Washer
Best for: Most homes: patios, paths, cars and garden furniture
- Max pressure
- 130 bar
- Flow rate
- 420 l/h
- Weight
- 11.5kg
- Hose reel
- No
- Best for
- All-round home use
The K 4 is the sweet spot of Kärcher's range. The Guardian's tester found that the K 4 fixed most of their complaints about the cheaper K 2 and K 3: it's heavier, so it stays upright, and the Flex versions come with Kärcher's PremiumFlex hose, which stays straight instead of springing back into coils. The Power Control gun shows the pressure setting, and the Dirt Blaster rotating nozzle is great for patio slabs.
Owners rate it about 4.6 stars and mostly call it a brilliant, easy-to-use machine that cleans cars and patios well. A minority report units failing early, and some find it a bit heavy to carry. There's no hose reel, so plan where you'll store the hose. Kärcher sells several K 4 bundles. Check the listing to see which accessories (patio cleaner, brush, foam) are included.
What owners and reviewers like
- Strong cleaning power for most UK gardens
- Kink-resistant Flex hose
- Stable, doesn't topple
- Pressure shown on the gun
Watch-outs
- No hose reel
- Fairly heavy
- Some reports of early failures

Kärcher K 5 Power Control Flex Pressure Washer
Best for: Large driveways, block paving and heavy grime
- Max pressure
- 145 bar
- Flow rate
- 500 l/h
- Weight
- 13kg
- Hose reel
- Check variant
- Best for
- Big areas, stubborn dirt
The K 5 steps up to 145 bar and 500 l/h, and Kärcher rates its area coverage at 40m² an hour against the K 4's 30m². That means less time on a big driveway. Owners who've bought it are very positive about its cleaning, including on porcelain paving.
Is it worth it over the K 4? The Guardian tested a K 5 (Comfort Premium) and found the extra power didn't make a dramatic difference on everyday patio, decking and car jobs. Choose it for large areas or very stubborn grime. This Amazon listing offers several bundles (Home Kit and Car & Home), and the default selection may not be the one you want, so check the variant and accessories before buying.
What owners and reviewers like
- Highest pressure and flow here
- Faster on large areas
- Very positive owner feedback
- Flex hose
Watch-outs
- Expensive, especially in larger bundles
- Heavy
- Overkill for small patios

Bosch UniversalAquatak 135 High Pressure Washer
Best for: Strong performance at a lower price, in a lighter body
- Max pressure
- 135 bar
- Flow rate
- Approx. 450 l/h (Guardian's measured 7.5 l/min)
- Weight
- 6.9kg (Guardian)
- Hose reel
- No
- Best for
- Value, lighter weight
The Guardian found the UniversalAquatak 135 quickly lifted dirt from every surface it was pointed at and held its own against larger rivals, while weighing only 6.9kg. The 3-in-1 nozzle switches between fan, rotary and pencil jets by twisting, so you don't need to swap lances. There's a detergent nozzle and a 7m hose.
Owners often call it amazing value and like that it's easy to move about. The Guardian criticised the hose's tendency to stay coiled and the lack of an extension wand. Owner reviews also include a worrying minority of durability complaints (cracked handles or nozzles, motors failing), so register the warranty (The Guardian lists three years) and keep your receipt.
What owners and reviewers like
- Excellent cleaning for the price
- Light and easy to move
- Handy 3-in-1 rotating nozzle
- Detergent nozzle included
Watch-outs
- Hose likes to stay coiled
- No extension wand
- Some durability complaints

Kärcher K 2 Power Control Home Pressure Washer
Best for: Small patios, balconies, bikes and garden furniture
- Max pressure
- 110 bar
- Flow rate
- 360 l/h
- Weight
- 4kg
- Hose reel
- No
- Best for
- Small jobs, tight budgets
The K 2 is Kärcher's entry-level range. This Power Control Home kit adds the Power Control gun and a home kit (check the listing for the exact accessories). It's one of Amazon UK's most-reviewed pressure washers, with 7,600+ ratings averaging about 4.6 stars, and owners say it's more than powerful enough for patios, paths and moss on block paving.
The trade-offs are build quality and stability. The Guardian named the K 2 Classic its best budget choice but found the hose wanted to stay curled and the light body was prone to tipping over. Owners raise similar points, plus some flimsy wheels and handles. For occasional use it's great value.
What owners and reviewers like
- Affordable
- Light and compact
- Plenty of power for small patios
- Huge owner review base
Watch-outs
- Lighter build; can tip over
- Hose tends to curl
- Some reports of breakages

Kärcher OC 3 Portable Low Pressure Washer
Best for: Muddy dogs, boots, bikes and camping, with no tap needed
- Max pressure
- Low pressure (not a patio cleaner)
- Flow rate
- Check listing
- Weight
- Check listing
- Hose reel
- Spiral hose stored under tank
- Best for
- Portable rinsing
The OC 3 isn't a patio cleaner. It's a battery-powered, low-pressure rinser with a built-in water tank, so you can wash muddy paws, wellies, mountain bikes or camping gear anywhere, without a tap or a socket. The spiral hose and gun store under the removable tank.
Owners love it for dogs, boots and bikes after muddy walks and rides. The main complaints are the small water reservoir and, for some, battery life. If you need to clean a patio or car properly, buy one of the mains models above.
What owners and reviewers like
- No tap or socket needed
- Great for dogs, boots and bikes
- Compact storage
- Gentle low pressure
Watch-outs
- Small water tank
- Not for patios or heavy dirt
- Mixed views on battery life and value

Bar and flow rate: what you actually need
Around 100–110 bar suits small patios, garden furniture and bikes. 120–135 bar covers most patios, paths and cars. 140+ bar helps with large driveways and block paving. Flow rate (l/h) matters as much as pressure, because more water moving means faster rinsing. The Guardian's tester found that, beyond a point, more power didn't dramatically improve everyday results.
Hose quality and storage

A cheap stiff hose that keeps curling is the most common annoyance. Look for 'Flex' or anti-twist hoses, and consider a hose reel if you'll use it often. Every model here uses standard UK hose connectors, but you need your own garden hose to supply water.
Accessories worth having
A rotating/dirt-blaster nozzle is the workhorse for patios. A patio surface cleaner stops splashback and gives an even finish on slabs and decking. A foam nozzle or wash brush is useful for cars. Bundles are usually cheaper than buying accessories separately.
Protecting your surfaces

High pressure can blast out jointing sand, damage soft wood and strip paint. Start with a fan jet at a distance and test a hidden area first. Re-sand block paving joints afterwards. Never use the narrow point jet on car paint or soft timber.
Safety and detergent
Wear eye protection and sturdy shoes, keep the cable away from water, and never point the jet at people or pets. Only use detergent through the machine's detergent tank or nozzle, never in the water supply.
Brands we didn't link
The Nilfisk Core 140 is well reviewed (The Guardian's pick for variable pressure), but the Amazon UK listing we found was for an EU-plug version, so we haven't linked it. The Guardian's overall winner, the Ava Go P40, is mainly sold direct. We'll review it for a future update.
FAQs
Is a pressure washer worth it for a small patio?
Yes, an entry-level model like the Kärcher K 2 will clean a small patio far faster than scrubbing. For one-off jobs, consider hiring instead.
Kärcher or Bosch?
Both are reliable choices. Kärcher has the widest range and accessories, while Bosch's UniversalAquatak 135 offers strong performance in a lighter body. Check warranty terms on the listing.
Can I use a pressure washer on my car?
Yes, but use a fan or rinse setting from a safe distance and ideally a foam pre-wash. Avoid the narrow point jet on paintwork.
When is the best time to buy?
Prices are often lower around Black Friday and in late winter before the spring rush. We don't list prices because they change constantly. Use the links to check.
Can pressure washers damage block paving?
They can wash out the jointing sand. Use a patio cleaner attachment or wider spray, and re-sand the joints afterwards.
