How we chose: We compared sizes, materials, fixing methods and features from manufacturer listings, read independent product testing (including Smart Bark's tested roundup) and weighed what Amazon.co.uk owners say about fit, slipping, waterproofing and cleaning. If you walk your dog on fields, beaches or woodland paths between October and March, you already know the problem: wet fur, muddy paws and sand ground into the seats. A good seat cover or boot liner is one of the cheapest ways to protect your car's resale value, and it makes clean-up a two-minute wipe or a machine wash instead of a valet.

Pick by where your dog travels. A hammock covers the back seat and footwells. A boot liner protects the boot floor, sides and bumper in estates and SUVs. A front-seat cover suits small dogs in a carrier or on the passenger seat. Then check size, waterproofing, non-slip backing and whether it's machine washable.

The picks in detail

1
Best back-seat hammock

KYG Dog Car Hammock Seat Cover with mesh viewing window, 135×148cm

Best for: Medium and large dogs on the back seat

Type
Back-seat hammock
Size (per listing)
135 × 148cm
Fixing
Headrest straps, seat anchors, non-slip backing
Best for
Most cars and SUVs

KYG's hammock is one of the best-rated dog seat covers on Amazon UK, with 6,600+ ratings averaging about 4.6 stars. It covers the whole back seat and footwell. A mesh window in the front panel lets air through and lets your dog see you, which can help anxious travellers, and a non-slip backing with seat anchors helps stop it sliding. A seatbelt tether is included.

Owners consistently say it fits well, especially in SUVs, takes about ten minutes to fit, stays in place and keeps muddy paws off the upholstery. Paw prints wipe off and it dries quickly. If you often carry rear passengers, the hammock shape takes up the whole back seat, so look for a design with zip-open side sections.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Covers seat and footwell
  • Mesh window for airflow and reassurance
  • Stays put with anchors and non-slip backing
  • Huge, very positive review base

Watch-outs

  • Takes over the whole back seat
  • Check the size against your car
  • The included tether isn't a crash-tested harness

2
Best budget hammock

Amazon Basics Hammock Seat Cover for Pets, 140×150cm

Best for: Simple, cheap protection for occasional muddy trips

Type
Back-seat hammock
Size (per listing)
Approx. 140 × 150cm
Fixing
4 headrest loops, 2 seat anchors
Best for
Budget

A no-frills polyester hammock that covers the back seat. It fixes with four headrest loops and two seat anchors. Owners call it great value, durable and waterproof enough for wet, muddy walks, and say it fits well and stays in place.

The most common complaint is the seatbelt access holes, which are wide open slits that can let dirt and hair through. It's also spot-clean only rather than machine washable, according to the listing.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Very affordable
  • Durable and waterproof per owners
  • Simple to fit
  • Roomy for long-legged dogs

Watch-outs

  • Seatbelt slits let dirt through
  • Spot clean only
  • No viewing window

3
Best boot liner (estates & SUVs)

Kurgo Rover Cargo Cape boot liner, charcoal

Best for: Dogs that ride in the boot of an estate or SUV

Type
Boot liner with bumper flap
Size (per listing)
Check listing for dimensions
Fixing
Headrest straps, Velcro
Best for
Estates, SUVs, split rear seats

Kurgo's Cargo Cape lines the boot floor and sides. It has raised piped edges to trap dirt and water, a bumper flap with reflective trim to stop claws scratching the paint as your dog jumps in, mesh pockets for leads, and a zip so it works with 60/40 or 50/50 split rear seats.

Owners praise the quality, coverage and durability, and say the Velcro keeps it from slipping. Measure your boot before buying. Cargo liners are generally designed for larger boots and may be too big for small hatchbacks.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Bumper flap protects paintwork
  • Works with split-folding seats
  • Durable, well-made per owners
  • Storage pockets

Watch-outs

  • May be too large for small hatchbacks
  • Check dimensions carefully
  • Pricier than basic liners

4
UK-brand boot protector

Henry Wag Car Boot'n'Bumper Protector, Large (SUV/estate, up to 110 × 110cm)

Best for: Owners who want a simple, tough boot protector from a UK pet brand

Type
Boot liner with bumper flap
Size (per listing)
Fits boots up to 110 × 110cm
Fixing
Around rear headrests + Velcro to seat backs
Best for
SUVs and estates

Henry Wag is a British pet-care brand, and its Boot'n'Bumper protector is a straightforward tear-resistant liner with a bumper flap. It fixes around the rear head restraints and Velcros to the back of the rear seats. The listing notes it's moving to GRS-certified recycled polyester.

It has only a handful of Amazon ratings so far, so there's limited owner evidence. We include it as a sized option for UK cars rather than a proven bestseller. For hatchbacks, Henry Wag also sells a Small version (B0777318YJ), which fits boots up to 100 × 70cm.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Clear sizing for UK cars
  • Bumper flap
  • Tough, tear-resistant fabric
  • Small version for hatchbacks

Watch-outs

  • Very few Amazon reviews
  • No side walls on smaller boots
  • Check fit before muddy season

5
Best front-seat cover

Vailge Water-Resistant Non-Slip Dog Front Seat Cover

Best for: Small dogs in a carrier or booster seat, or covering one seat

Type
Front (or single) seat cover
Size (per listing)
Approx. 101 × 50 × 18cm
Fixing
Headrest strap, seat anchors, non-slip backing
Best for
Single seat

A quilted 600D Oxford cover with a water-resistant TPU layer and a skirt that protects the front of the seat cushion. Owners say it fits front seats well, stays in place, keeps seats dry and is easy to wash and to take on and off. One owner mentions it working well with Labradors.

Remember that front airbags make the front passenger seat a poor place for dogs. Many vets and safety bodies recommend the back seat or boot. A front-seat cover is best for protecting a seat used by a small dog in a secured carrier, or for covering a seat for muddy kit.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Water-resistant quilted fabric
  • Front skirt protects the seat edge
  • Easy to fit and wash
  • Good value

Watch-outs

  • Single seat only
  • Front seat isn't ideal for dogs (airbags)
  • Basic style

6
Alternative front-seat cover

AUTOARK Dog Front Seat Cover

Best for: An alternative single-seat cover

Type
Front (or single) seat cover
Size (per listing)
Approx. 51 × 112cm (20 × 44in)
Fixing
2 buckles, seat anchors, rubber backing
Best for
Single seat

A second front-seat option if the Vailge doesn't fit your car or style. The listing describes a waterproof, machine-washable (gentle cycle) polyester cover with rubber non-slip backing, seat anchors and quick-release buckles, at about 20 × 44 inches.

We've included it as an alternative rather than a top pick, so compare the size and recent owner reviews before buying.

What owners and reviewers like

  • Alternative fit and style
  • Single-seat protection
  • Easy to remove

Watch-outs

  • Check dimensions and recent reviews
  • Same airbag caveat as above
  • Fewer UK owner reviews than the Vailge

The Highway Code: a cover is not a restraint

Rule 57 of the Highway Code says dogs and other animals must be suitably restrained so they can't distract you or injure you or themselves if you stop quickly. It suggests a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard. A seat cover protects your upholstery but doesn't restrain your dog, so use one alongside a crash-tested harness, crate or boot guard. Breaking the Highway Code isn't automatically an offence, but it can count against you, and an unrestrained pet could affect an insurance claim.

Hammock vs bench cover vs boot liner

A hammock clips to front and rear headrests, covers the footwell and stops dogs jumping forward. A bench cover lies flat across the seat so people can still sit in the back. A boot liner suits dogs that travel in the boot behind a guard, ideally with a bumper flap for loading.

Fit and sizing

Measure seat width and boot floor (length and width) before buying. Hatchbacks usually need a small boot liner, while estates and SUVs need large. Check for seatbelt and child-seat (ISOFIX) access openings if the back seat is shared.

Waterproofing and cleaning

Look for a waterproof (not just 'water-resistant') layer, raised edges or side flaps for wet dogs, and non-slip backing. Machine-washable covers are much easier in winter. Shake off sand and hair first, and air-dry rather than tumble-dry unless the label allows it.

Kong covers we couldn't link

Smart Bark's tested roundup rated the KONG 2-in-1 Bench Seat Cover highly, but we couldn't find a reliable Amazon UK listing for it. KONG's Ultimate Cargo Liner was out of stock when we checked. We'll add them if they become available.

FAQs

Is it illegal to have a dog loose in the car in the UK?

The Highway Code (Rule 57) says animals must be suitably restrained. Ignoring it isn't automatically an offence, but you could be charged with driving without due care if your dog distracts you, and it may affect insurance claims. Use a harness, crate or dog guard.

Hammock or bench seat cover?

A hammock covers the footwell and stops your dog climbing forward, so it's best for dogs who travel alone in the back. A bench cover lets passengers sit beside the dog.

How do I clean a dog car seat cover?

Shake or vacuum off hair and sand, then wipe or machine wash according to the label. Many covers are cold-wash only and should be air-dried.

Will a seat cover work with ISOFIX child seats?

Some have openings for ISOFIX and seatbelt buckles, but never fit a child seat on top of a slippery cover unless the child-seat maker allows it.

Can my dog sit in the front seat?

Many vets and safety bodies recommend the back seat or boot, because front airbags can seriously injure a dog. If a small dog must travel in front, use a secured crash-tested carrier and check your car's airbag guidance.
